SUBMITTED BY HYLA ERNST
Sako is one of my favorite lunch spots in Iwakuni, but it was one of those places that I assumed everyone already knew about so it wasn’t very high on my “to share” list. As I’ve discovered recently, not everyone actually knows about this local joint just a few blocks away from the main gate . Since the restaurant recently moved to a new location, it was the perfect opportunity for me to grab a sandwich with a friend. You know, in the name of research…
The interior of the new restaurant is more spacious and inviting. There are three tables and two counters with barstools.
There is an English menu and the staff speaks English. I normally order the Avocado BLT sandwich with a side of fried potatoes (french fries).
I have other pictures that I’ve compiled over several visits to Sako and will be updating the post with those eventually, but here’s a picture of one of their famous BLT sandwiches–thick, lightly toasted slices of bread with fresh tomato and crisp lettuce and PLENTY of bacon…mmmm. You can even add cheese, avocado, or egg–or all of the above.
While most people associate Sako with their mouthwatering BLT sandwiches, they do have other type of sandwiches and sides as well as Japanese dishes on the menu. My kids are big fans of Sako’s bacon fried rice and my husband swears by their onion rings.
I know that after awhile of living in Iwakuni, I sometimes forget that there is a great place to grab quick bite practically outside the gate. Definitely give Sako a try if you have not visited them. If you are lucky and mekans are in season, you might even get a fresh mekan with your sandwich!
