Willer Express (Overnight Bus in Japan)
SUBMITTED BY BRAD AND ROBYN BOUNDS
If you are looking for an efficient and cheap way to travel across Japan then you might want to try the bus company Willer Express (willerexpress.com).
Myself, wife and six year old took an overnight bus trip from Tokyo to Hiroshima while visiting Japan. It took 12 hours and cost about 6000 for adults and 4000 for my daughter. That cheaper than most hotels in Japan and you don’t waste a day traveling. We also took the bus from Hiroshima to Kyoto that cost a little less and took around nine hours.
The company does more than make it comfortable for you to sleep they make you sleep. We left Tokyo around 7:30 p.m. and by 10:30 it was lights out. Not only are you not allowed to talk on your cell phone you can’t even have it on to look at it due to the light it emits. The chairs recline more than what you use to in an airplane also which is good if the guy person behind is OK with it.
There are a few things to be aware of though. I am not sure I would travel with really young kids. The crying in the night might feel really awkward in a bus opposed to a plane. At least the planes have the engine noise to drown out the sound. I saw nobody younger than my daughter on either trip. Also, there was no bathroom on the bus. This was alarming at first, but they stop every two hours for breaks and it was no big deal. Finally, if you are an odd number family prepare to be moved away from them. Non family members can not sit next to people of the opposite sex. My daughter and wife sat together, but I was moved to the male side. I thought it was odd at first, but then understood after seeing how dark it got in there.
